Now that the weather is finally warming up, it’s a great time to get outside and enjoy the weather. I’ve discovered that when I’m able to spend more time outside, I’m happier. I also feel healthier, and make smarter food choices.
But being outside presents a whole new set of worries. I stress about exposing my kids to sun, ticks, and mosquitoes. I could use harsh chemical products, but I worry equally about the safety of these chemicals. Luckily, I recently discovered the SmartShield family of products.
I love SmartShield’s DEET-free SPF 30 sunscreen and insect repellant combo. This product comes in a pump spray and also in wipes. It provides UVA and UVB protection, and it’s the first eco-friendly insect repellant I’ve found that keeps ticks off as effectively as DEET. It’s doesn’t smell as yummy as most sunscreens, but the scent is a lot better than the average bug spray, and not at all offensive.
I’ve also had the opportunity to try the SmartShield Eco-Friendly Self-Tanner with SPF 15. I always use an SPF of at least 30 when I play outside with the kids, which makes it awfully hard to get a tan. It smells divine, and it was so amazing to apply this lotion and in a few days time, watch my skin acquire a golden glow! I have a hard time tanning; I usually burn, peel, and then return to a ghostly pallor. Not anymore! I highly recommend this self-tanner, but should be used with caution, as it will stain clothing and stain your knees if you don’t exfoliate properly!
Now that you’re properly protected from the sun and insects, it’s time to get outside and have some fun! Read below for a list of ideas that will help you keep fit and enjoy the outdoors at the same time.
Yard Work: Mowing can be a great workout. If you regularly use a self-propelled mower, try turning off that feature, and work your muscles to the max! Also, don’t forget about hoeing, raking, pulling weeds, and weed-eating, which can be great for muscle tone.
The "Scenic" Route: When shopping or running errands, build time into your schedule so that you can walk instead of driving, if possible. If you must drive, boost your daily cardio by parking at the far side of the parking lot or taking the stairs instead of an elevator.
Housework: Now that spring has officially sprung, why not get down and dirty with some spring cleaning? Rearranging a room’s furniture, scrubbing a dirty oven, and carrying heavy baskets of laundry out to the clothesline are all great ways to get in a little extra exercise.
Inner Child: Take a cue from your kids, and you’ll get a great workout! Walk to the park or play right in your own backyard. Try Follow-the Leader, Hide & Seek, Red-Light-Green Light, Catch, Kickball, and Simon Says.
Nature Walk: Go for a hike and burn some extra calories while you enjoy nature. The kids will love it, too!
Swim: I’m not talking about lounging around on a raft all day. Swim like your children do, with energy and enthusiasm.
Bike: Dust off the bicycle that’s been sitting in your garage and give your inner child a thrill! Bike riding is a great activity to do together as a family.

The active ingredients in most of the SmartShield SPF 30 products are actually not so great according to Skin Deep (www.cosmeticsdatabase.com). They use Padimate O (a PABA derivative and rated a “6″ on Skin Deep) and Oxybenzone (an “8″) for their face sticks. You can go here to see their labels (which I had to email them to get - it’s not linked on the site as far as I could see).
